Perfect Places for Couples in San Francisco

San Francisco is known as a romantic city for lovers of all kinds which makes it the perfect location for couples, from weekend breakers to honeymooners.

The list is endless when it comes to romantic hotspots in the city but we’ve managed to narrow it down to our top 5!

A legendary San Francisco landmark since 1939, Top of the Mark (located at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins) is one of the most iconic places in the city to grab a signature cocktail while watching the sunset over the bay.  Take in the spectacular views of the city’s skyline as it comes to life over a drink and nibbles from their tapas menu with your loved one and have a night to remember.

Be warned that Top of the Mark is a popular place, especially at weekends, so plan accordingly and arrive before to evening rush (which is advisable if you want a decent table to watch the sunset) or be prepared for a wait among the crowds.

When you decide to holiday in a big city, you usually expect a week of hustle and bustle, aching feet and buildings as far as the eye can see. While this is true of San Francisco, there is also a place of sanctuary. A peaceful haven of green. This place is Golden Gate Park.

(Random trivia: Golden Gate Park is 20% bigger than Central Park!)

You can quite easily spend a full day in the park alone if you were so inclined, with a vast array of activities to keep you occupied; from California Academy of Sciences to the fields of bison, from the basketball courts to Hippie Hill – the list is endless. I could go on and on about the park but for this particular post, my suggestion would be why not pack up a picnic, take a steady stroll through the park and settle down for lunch in Shakespeare Garden among the many flowers that are mentioned in his works, or walk a little further in and have your picnic at Strawberry Hill. From here, you can easily rent a rowboat or paddleboat for an hour and have a steady meander across the lake.

Another longstanding San Francisco tradition. Cliff House offers a Sunday buffet brunch with free-flowing champagne, stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Need I say anymore?

Reservations are a must. There are only three sittings and it’s recommended that you book at least one week in advance for small parties, three weeks in advance for larger parties. Check out the Cliff House website here.

Looking for something away from the stereotypical San Francisco hotspots? Then look no further.

Presidio is a beautiful part of the city with many a romantic spot, from Lover’s Lane to Presidio Officer’s Club (free jazz night every Friday!) but our favourite is Presidio Twilight by Off The Grid. Located on the Main Parade Ground, this weekly occurrence on a Thursday evening from 5-9pm, April to October, is a hive of activity where you can visit food trucks, take part in yoga classes, listen to live music and even play the odd game of giant Jenga. And the best part? It’s free. Well, obviously you pay for your food from one of the many, many food trucks but you get the idea. All this while watching the sunset, toasting marshmallows over a fire pit, wrapped in a blanket with the person you love. Sounds wonderful, right?

No, we’re not telling you to bob along to sit for ninety minutes squinting at the big screen, trying to keep up with the subtitles all while ignoring the person you wanted to go on a date with in the first place. Foreign Cinema is a dining experience with a difference.

If you’re looking for wonderful food to go with your great company and the chance to watch a classic movie then this is the place for you. Dine in their courtyard under the stars – with gas lamps to keep you toasty – while a classic film plays on the projector screen and enjoy a glass of wine from their extensive wine list.

Reservations are recommended as you can appreciate so don’t miss out on a potential evening to remember.

Theses are just our suggestions but we’d love to hear of any ideas you guys have! Have you ever been to any of the above? Let us know in the comments below.
